I’ve been singing to my toddler son often these days.
I think children make the best audiences, until they learn to speak. That’s when you know what’s on their mind. Until then, it doesn’t matter whether I sing like Altaf Raja or dance like Dharmendra to entertain them.
In my head, I’m my son’s best entertainer.
In my son’s head, this right here – my singing – is the number one reason why as a teenager he’ll bring the house down with whatever trashy music he is into. Revenge taken, with compound interest.

Learning to play
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy
was one of the earliest tunes I learnt to play
on a guitar
a friend had lent to me.
Two chords
strummed with such enthusiasm,
the rhythm didn’t matter.
We didn’t care about getting the pitch right
Even if someone thought we should.
Just another memory
from the times
when we made more mistakes.
